Being an English Major Is About More than Just Reading Books

Did you know that Starbucks is named for a character in Moby Dick? Does the written word inspire your imagination? Are you interested in how Western culture’s history and knowledge have been passed down through the English language? As an English major at St. Francis College, you’ll learn about all this, and be prepared for a variety of careers.

Most employers know that an English Degree isn’t just for teaching anymore. They’re looking for the skills learned in literature and writing classes; candidates who are well read and have superior reading comprehension and writing skills. An English degree from St. Francis College emphasizes the solid, adaptable communication skills that will help get you through college and succeed in the workplace. While some English majors go on to graduate studies, others go into medicine, law, business, advertising, public relations, broadcasting, and more. By integrating traditional and contemporary thought, the English Department at St. Francis College seeks to provide students with an education of the highest quality in language, literature, and writing. Our English majors are taught to write forceful, energetic prose; learn sound organization, clarity, and critical thinking skills; develop a historical and cultural sense of literature, literary theory, and critical methods; and improve their critical reading skills.

Graduates from the St. Francis College English Department have gone on to do graduate work in a variety of fields, including at such places as Cornell University, the New York University School of Dentistry, Fordham University, the University of Iowa Creative Writing program and the University of Notre Dame.
