The Walt Whitman Writers Series
The Walt Whitman Writers Series is a new literary program that brings top contemporary authors to campus to share their work and writing experiences with students, faculty and the entire Brooklyn community.
The Series grew out of interest by St. Francis College to showcase the wonderful writers in our community. In the past writer/poet
Siri Hustvedt and author Shira Nayman have presented their work to packed, enthusiastic audiences.
“There is so much talent at our doorstep here in Brooklyn that it would be almost foolish if we didn’t try to share it with our students and expose them to a group of writers who are as varied as they are skilled,” said Writing Program Director and English Professor
Ian Maloney who coordinates the series with Associate Professor of English
Athena Devlin.
Walt Whitman, a long-time Brooklyn resident who often included the then-city of Brooklyn in his work, was a natural choice to be honored by naming the writer series for him.
