St. Francis Hosts Undergraduate Math Conference
5th Annual Spuyten Duyvil Conference Attracts Math Scholars from Northeast
More than 120 mathematicians from across the Northeast descended on St. Francis College April 24 for the 5th Annual Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. The conference, hosted by the St. Francis Department of Mathematics had a strong College presence with 10 talks and two posters presented by students and professors from St. Francis. In all there were more than 40 talks spread out over 12 topical sessions.
The conference offered undergraduates the opportunity to attend and actively participate in a professional mathematics meeting by offering presentations and descriptions of original research and getting feedback from their peers and professors.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Mathematician Dr. Martin Moskowitz from the City University of New York Graduate Center. He spoke about The Fundamental Group and Covering Groups of Topological Groups. Topics for the other sessions included; Game theory, Probability Theory and Topology and Geometry. The daylong conference concluded with a screening of the movie Fractals: Hunting the Hidden Dimension.
"It's a great honor to host this conference," said Chair of the Mathematics Department Dr. Fotios Paliogiannis. "Scholars of all ages came to our campus from across the region and gave all in attendance a great academic experience."
The conference was made possible with the support and encouragement of the Office of the Academic Dean, Dean Timothy J. Houlihan, the American Mathematical Association and a grant from the National Science Foundation.
