CCesar Vargas graduated from St. Francis College in 2005 and since then has championed the cause for citizenship for unauthorized immigrants. His parents brought him to the United States from Mexico when he was five. Vargas' status stopped him from joining the United States Armed Forces and now is putting up roadblocks in his effort to become a lawyer.

St. Francis College Sociology and Criminal Justice Professor Emily Horowitz wrote a piece for The Huffington Post entitled, "Manufacturing Fear: Halloween Laws for Sex Offenders." David Vann's novel, Dirt, beat out more than 170 other books to capture the $50,000 St. Francis College Literary Prize, one of the richest prizes in the United State. Vann's selection was announced Saturday, September 21 at the opening night gala for the Brooklyn Book Festival which was held at St. Francis College.
