Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a wireless network that my laptop "finds", but I may not know where it's coming from?

"Free" wireless hotspots are becoming more and more common.  However, not every wireless network that you pick up via your wireless device can be safe to access.  As a general rule, if you do not know where the wireless network is originating, you SHOULD NOT use it!  Hackers often set up "free" internet access for unsuspecting users, counting on them to connect.  It's then easy for them to capture everything you have sent over their network - including your passwords and credit card numbers.

Also, did you know that accessing someone's wireless network without permission is illegal in Indiana?  Yes, it's true - according to IC 35-43-2-3, accessing "any part of a computer system or computer network;
without the consent of the owner of the computer system or computer network, or the consent of the owner's licensee, commits computer trespass, a Class A misdemeanor."
