Dr Kaune primarily teaches in the criminal justice curriculum and is found in the introductory classroom as well as the capstone course for graduating seniors. He is currently researching and writing on the topics of survivalists, "doomsday preppers" and domestic terrorism. His past research into the use of hair testing for illegal drugs was funded by the federal government under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. He has presented his research to many criminal justice organizations such as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center, and the American Probation and Parole Association. Dr Kaune worked in the field of criminal justice during the 1970's and 1980's as a police officer, a probation and parole officer and as a deputy marshal. He has spent the last twenty years in the classroom and is a full professor with St. Francis College.
