Microbiota & the Immune System

BS, St. John's University
Ph.D., Brown University

My research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which the microbiota influences the host immune system. My interest in microbial mediated immunomodulation stemmed from my Ph.D. thesis work at Brown University, understanding the immunopathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori infection in the context of gastric cancer. As a postdoctoral fellow at New York University School of Medicine, in the lab of Dr. Martin Blaser, I focused on elucidating the effects of early-life macrolide antibiotic treatment on the intestinal microbiota and subsequent effects on immunity. During my tenure as a postdoctoral fellow, I trained over 20 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and was an adjunct assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Yeshiva University, respectively. In addition to my research, I am also interested in developing new and innovative pedagogical strategies to improve learning outcomes for undergraduate students interested in pursuing STEM fields.
