Congratulations Graduates

St. Francis College will host this year's Winter Commencement on January 21st, immediately following a Baccalaureate Mass at St. James Cathedral Basilica in Brooklyn.

The College will graduate approximately 150 undergraduate and graduate students this winter. Approximately 75 are expected to take part in the Commencement ceremony.

Dr. Marina Gair, Associate Professor and Chair of the SFC Education Department, will deliver the keynote address.

"I look forward to the opportunity to reinforce one last time to our graduates what I hope they will carry with them from St. Francis College," said Dr. Gair, who earned a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and has been a member of the SFC faculty since 2008.

Nermina Markisic, a Political Science major, is the SFC Winter 2020 valedictorian and will speak as well.

"I'm proud, grateful. I think I worked hard for it. I wasn't anticipating it, but I was really, really pushing for it," said Markisic, about her reaction to learning of her Valedictorian selection. Markisic graduates with Summa Cum Laude honors and as the recipient of the Dr. Scholl Foundation Scholarship.

Also among the winter 2020 graduates is Management major Rochella Providence of Trinidad & Tobago. In addition to Summa Cum Laude honors, Providence earned the St. Francis College Stanley Willing Memorial Award for Excellence in Business Management. During her SFC career, she received three merit-based scholarships: the Honorable Anthony J. Genovesi Scholarship, The Robert J. McGuire Scholarship and the Richie Allen '96 Scholarship.

"Just like my fellow colleagues, I feel very grateful upon the completion of this educational milestone," said Providence, who studied abroad in Segovia, Spain for the fall 2018 semester. "But what I cherish the most about my time at St. Francis are the bonds I formed with my peers and professors, the life-changing lessons and nuggets of wisdom shared with me along the way, and the exposure I had to another country and culture that allowed me to beautifully grow and transform in ways I never imagined."

The Winter 2020 graduating cohort includes eleven Master of Fine Arts students and 6 students earning Master's degrees in Accounting.
