Biology Minor

Program Overview

The Biology program is a four-year curriculum that provides students with a strong foundation in the biological sciences through both classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory experience. The program emphasizes the scientific method, critical and analytical thinking, and ethical responsibility while preparing students for graduate and professional study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, research, and secondary education.

Students begin with introductory courses in chemistry and general biology, focusing on cellular and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, and ecology, while also developing essential analytical and computational skills. As they progress, students take advanced courses in areas such as organic chemistry, cell biology, genetics, physics, and biochemistry, and complete specialized biology electives aligned with areas of concentration. The program encourages early involvement in research and culminates in a senior seminar and comprehensive examination, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional careers and further academic study.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The Biology minor is designed to strengthen a student’s background in the biological sciences, although it is not intended as preparation for graduate study.

The minor requires completion of BIO-1201 General Biology I and BIO-1202 General Biology II, along with their corresponding laboratories, BIO-1201L and BIO-1202L. Students must also take BIO-2250 Introduction to Cell Biology and BIO-2250L Introduction to Cell Biology Laboratory, and select two additional biology (BIO) courses.

In addition, the minor includes CHE-1201 General Chemistry I and CHE-1202 General Chemistry II, along with their respective laboratories, CHE-1201L and CHE-1202L. Altogether, the Biology minor requires 30–32 credit hours.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

PLO 1: Design and perform experiments that demonstrate the scientific method, incorporate vocabulary and college, and analyze data, and write a cogent lab report.

PLO 2: Make oral presentations that demonstrate the scientific method.

PLO 3: Demonstrate connections among population biology, ecology and evolution, molecular and cellular biology and organismal biology, and among biology, chemistry and physics.

PLO 4: Make qualitative and quantitative assessments of their own data as well as that in scientific literature.

PLO 5: Create and explain illustrations of biological phenomena.

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS
