Honoring and Caring for God's Creation

St. Francis of Assisi is known for his affinity and tender care for God's creation. This love for nature and its inhabitants sprung forth because he saw the dignity in its members. His actions demonstrated that there is an inherent value in everything God made. This truth dictates how we ought to treat planet Earth.

With the environmental crisis we are facing, it is imperative that all people adopt Francis's values: love, equality, justice, and peace. Carrying out the virtues of Francis can have many forms. It can be the simple practice of recycling or more laborious environment clean-ups and continuous reflection in nature on the wonders of God. No matter what we do, God sees and knows it. He created this beautiful Earth as a gift for us; what better way to honor this possession than with our thanks and humility.

If we view all living beings as integral, unique members of creation, we will cultivate greater respect and awareness of their need for our care. Just in the way creation takes care of us, providing us with water, sustenance, medicine, and shelter, they, too, need our care. Our divine Creator orders this design and reveals His continuous teachings to live a life geared towards love. Love of the gifts we have, the people we see, and the creation we live with.

I believe if St. Francis were present on Earth today, he would be a modern spiritual environmentalist. One who convicts people that part of their human duty owed to God is to tend to the Earth and subdue it. His gentle yet courageous nature is inspiring and enlightening. Let us all reflect on what Francis would call us to do and be open to this revolution.
