SFC Graduate with Cerebral Palsy Walks Across Stage in Emotional Commencement Moment

May 2025 | Brooklyn, NY

In an unforgettable moment that captured the hearts of many, Jessica Huang, a graduating senior at St. Francis College, fulfilled a personal dream: walking across the stage to receive her diploma — without the aid of her wheelchair.

Jessica, who lives with cerebral palsy, set this goal early in her academic journey. Through determination, strength, and months of preparation, she accomplished it — to the surprise and joy of her parents, classmates, and the entire SFC community.

Her story was recently featured by CBS News New York, where reporter Kristie Keleshian captured the emotional moment and spoke with Jessica and her family about the significance of her walk.

"I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it," Jessica said. "This is something I’ve worked so hard for — not just the degree, but this moment of independence."

St. Francis College is incredibly proud to celebrate Jessica’s remarkable achievement, which exemplifies the resilience, courage, and Franciscan spirit that define our Terrier family.
