Available now online, the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) provides an opportunity for students who have earned a discipline-based bachelor's degree to complete the professional preparation requirements necessary to become a New York State certified teacher.

This one-year full-time, or part-time equivalent, program will prepare you with the knowledge and skills to become an effective teacher and culminates in a supervised teaching practicum in a NYC partner school to gain practical, hands-on experience with a diverse student population. You'll have the opportunity to build relationships with mentor teachers, staff, and administrators, as well as gain other professional knowledge in support of learner success.

Program objectives

• The primary educational and career objectives of the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) are to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and necessary competencies for teaching in today's inclusive classroom.
• To that end, some of the topics in the post-baccalaureate certificate include: theories of teaching, learning, and cognition; the integration of technology across the curriculum to extend learning; introduction to special education and identification of resources for supporting universal design for learning; methods of effective teaching in the inclusive classroom; assessment and evaluation; literacy instruction; and, investigating how learners process emotional, social, and cognitive stimuli.
• In addition, students will gain hands-on experience through quality field-based experiences where they can build relationships with mentor teachers, staff, and administrators, as well as gain other professional knowledge in support of learner success.
• At the completion of the post-baccalaureate certificate, graduates will be prepared with the content knowledge to take the licensure exams necessary to become certified teachers in public, private, and charter schools.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) consists of eight core courses, and supervised student teaching placement totaling 30 credit hours. Plus, students will undertake New York state-mandated workshops in School Violence Prevention, Child Abuse Identification and Reporting, and Dignity for All Students Act. Credit will be awarded for previously completed workshops or courses.
