Program overview

The Forensic Science minor provides students with an interdisciplinary introduction to the scientific methods used in criminal investigations and evidence analysis. The program combines coursework in biology, chemistry, criminal justice, and digital forensics to help students understand how scientific techniques are applied to crime scene investigation and the examination of physical and digital evidence.

Students learn about evidence collection, laboratory procedures, investigative methods, and the role of forensic science within the criminal justice system. Courses explore areas such as forensic biology, forensic chemistry, criminal investigations, and computer forensics, providing insight into the tools and technologies used by modern forensic professionals.

The minor complements a wide range of majors—including criminal justice, biology, chemistry, computer science, and psychology—while strengthening students’ analytical, scientific, and investigative skills. It prepares students for careers related to forensic investigation, law enforcement, and forensic laboratory work, as well as for advanced study in forensic science or related fields.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

PLO 1: Identify the function and interrelationships between the major components of the American criminal justice system. 
PLO 2: Critically analyze key criminological theories. 
PLO 3: Understand the relationship between theory and criminal justice policy.
PLO 4: Explain the impact of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and class on criminal justice outcomes.

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS

The Forensic Science minor provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation in the scientific and investigative methods used in modern criminal investigations. Through courses such as Forensic Biology and Chemistry and Life I, students develop an understanding of biological and chemical evidence and the laboratory techniques used in forensic analysis. Introduction to Criminal Justice introduces the structure and function of the criminal justice system and the role forensic evidence plays in criminal investigations. 

Students also explore specialized topics through courses such as Forensic Science, Criminal Investigations, Special Topics in Criminal Justice, and Computer Forensics, which examine crime scene investigation, investigative procedures, emerging forensic technologies, and the analysis of digital evidence. Together, these courses provide students with a strong foundation in both the scientific and legal aspects of forensic investigation.
