Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Childhood Education

Program overview

Become a New York State certified teacher with the St. Francis College one-year post-baccalaureate certificate and make a positive impact in our children's development.

Available now online, the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) provides an opportunity for students who have earned a discipline-based bachelor's degree to complete the professional preparation requirements necessary to become a New York State certified teacher.

This one-year full-time, or part-time equivalent, program will prepare you with the knowledge and skills to become an effective teacher and culminates in a supervised teaching practicum in a NYC partner school to gain practical, hands-on experience with a diverse student population. You'll have the opportunity to build relationships with mentor teachers, staff, and administrators, as well as gain other professional knowledge in support of learner success.

Program requirements

The curriculum for the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) consists of eight core courses, and supervised student teaching placement totaling 30 credit hours. Plus, students will undertake New York state-mandated workshops in School Violence Prevention, Child Abuse Identification and Reporting, and Dignity for All Students Act. Credit will be awarded for previously completed workshops or courses.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

PLO 1: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to recognize the range of individual differences in how students learn and customize instruction to accommodate such diversity.  

PLO 2: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to develop culturally responsive curriculum and instruction that draws on linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as family background and community values as assets that can be used to promote learning.

PLO 3: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to maintain an inclusive learning environment that promotes positive social interactions, acceptance, collaboration, mutual respect, multicultural awareness, an appreciation of diversity, and a concern for others.

PLO 4: Teacher candidates demonstrate an understanding of the central concepts, principles, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplinary areas that they teach and create meaningful learning experiences to ensure learner mastery of the content.

PLO 5: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to make content knowledge relevant to learners by connecting it to local, state, national, and global issues.

PLO 6: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to align lessons with NYS curricular standards for college readiness and successful performance on state-mandated tests.

PLO 7: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to use a variety of instructional strategies to engage, motivate; promote critical thinking, self-directed learning, creativity, and collaborative problem solving to extend learners’ understanding of the content areas.

PLO 8: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to integrate new technologies across content areas to deliver instruction in meaningful ways and add value to the overall learning experience.

PLO 9: Teacher candidates demonstrate an understanding of the uses, strengths, and limitations of various forms of assessment practices to document learner progress and adjust instruction as needed.

PLO 10: Teacher candidates support the academic, social, and emotional development of all students through dispositions such as acceptance, empathy, caring, fairness, student advocacy, and the belief that all students can learn.

PLO 11: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to be self-reflective and use this knowledge to seek critical feedback, enhance their repertoire of teaching skills, and pursue professional development opportunities in the best interest of learners.

PLO 12: Teacher candidates demonstrate the ability to foster positive interactions and collaborate with progressional colleagues and school personnel in support of student learning, development, and well-being.

Program objectives

The primary educational and career objectives of the Post-Baccalaureate in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) are to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and necessary competencies for teaching in today's inclusive classroom.

To that end, some of the topics in the post-baccalaureate certificate include: theories of teaching, learning, and cognition; the integration of technology across the curriculum to extend learning; introduction to special education and identification of resources for supporting universal design for learning; methods of effective teaching in the inclusive classroom; assessment and evaluation; literacy instruction; and, investigating how learners process emotional, social, and cognitive stimuli.

In addition, students will gain hands-on experience through quality field-based experiences where they can build relationships with mentor teachers, staff, and administrators, as well as gain other professional knowledge in support of learner success.

At the completion of the post-baccalaureate certificate, graduates will be prepared with the content knowledge to take the licensure exams necessary to become certified teachers in public, private, and charter schools.
