Perseverance: A Gift In Our Life
One Franciscan value that really sticks out to me is perseverance. This value has been a guiding light through my ups and downs, especially during my time at Saint Francis College.
As a Texan transfer student and a senior majoring in Biology, I’ve faced some tough times. Losing 100 pounds while trying out for Division 1 water polo and swimming wasn’t easy. I tried out for the team three times and hit some serious roadblocks. There were moments when it felt like giving up was the easiest choice, but perseverance kept me going. Even when I faced academic probation and couldn’t play sports for a while, I didn’t let it stop me. I changed my eating habits, revamped my workout routine, and focused hard on my studies, which led to a big improvement in my GPA.
In addition to sports and academics, I’ve gained valuable experience working in various medical roles. From being a medical scribe and assistant to now working as a physical therapy technician at SPEAR Physical Therapy, each job has brought me closer to my goal of getting a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. This career path wasn’t always smooth, but perseverance helped me keep pushing forward.
On a personal level, my relationship with Serene Arana has been incredibly meaningful. Our shared spiritual growth has deepened my commitment to my faith and studies. I’ve spent an extra year in college to prepare better for graduate school, showing that perseverance isn't just about bouncing back from setbacks but also about making the most of the journey.
Perseverance, as a Franciscan value, has been a real gift in my life. It’s helped me overcome obstacles and stay focused on my goals, and I’m grateful for how it’s shaped my journey.
