$100,000+ Raised at Meadow Brook Golf Outing

More than 160 participate on links and at clinic

More than 160 alumni/ae and friends of St. Francis College birdied their way to more than $100,000 for student scholarships on June 23 at the Annual Meadow Brook Golf Outing.

A premier fund raising event for the College, the Outing is held at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, New York, one of the most prestigious courses in the northeast. Money raised from the event benefits the St. Francis College scholarship fund. Golfers are treated to a brunch, a day of golf and a cocktail reception with gifts and giveaways.

"This is our tenth year holding this event and we are proud to announce that we have reached our goal of raising more than $1 million over the decade," said Edward Travaglianti '70, President of Commerce Bank, Long Island and co-chairman of the event.

"The generous support of our donors helps St. Francis keep to a core of our mission, to make sure working class students can still afford to attend a quality, private institution," added new St. Francis College President and other event co-chair Brendan J. Dugan '68.

While 145 golfers teed off and putted on the course, for the first time, the golf outing also included a two hour golf clinic with a PGA Professionals. Twenty-one people signed up for the clinic, making the day the best attended of the ten Outings.

"We thought a golf clinic would be a great way to bring newer golfers to the event," said Josephine Foley Savastano '87. "We're happy with the turnout and hope some of those who attended the clinic will play a full 18 holes next year, while more people will come out just for the lessons." Next year's Outing will be held on Monday June 22, 2009.

While the Meadow Brook Outing is a day of fun, golfers do keep score. The first place team by gross score included Jesus Linares '84, Hector Batista '84, Ira Romoff, Peter Kane and Jeff Russo. The first place team when handicaps are counted included Frank Franzino, Ray Nash '63, Mark Goetz and Joseph DiMauro, Sr. '70.

Final results on contributions to the Fund for St. Francis College for this fiscal year are still being tabulated, but the College expects to see a record high in gifts from alumni, friends and supporters of the College. Included in that total are two $1 million commitments from College alumnus John McCarthy '51 and his wife Mary and Roger Hertog, Vice Chairman Emeritus of AllianceBernstein, L.P..
