Educators of the Heart
Reflecting on the impact of the Franciscan Brothers brings to mind the profound ways in which their work has touched countless lives, including my own. The Franciscan Brothers' approach to education, rooted in humility, service, and community, resonates deeply with me, shaping my understanding of what true education can be and how it can transform not just individuals but entire school communities.
As a student, I did not attend a Franciscan school and, admittedly, saw my educational experience as a good one. School was where I learned what I needed to pass tests, excel on state exams, and gain entry into a good college. To a young, public school-educated adolescent, that was the purpose and goal of a high school education. Only after graduating from college and becoming an educator in a school founded and operated by the Franciscan Brothers did I realize my understanding of education—and how I viewed life, purpose, and fulfillment in general—was hollow and transactional.
My experiences as a faculty member in a Franciscan school are instrumental in my belief and trust in the Franciscan Brothers and their model of education. The environment they create in their schools is unique, blending academic excellence with a commitment to personal growth and a true belief that putting God above all else is the cornerstone of genuine learning. The Brothers have taught me to view my students not merely as teenagers needing curriculum but as individuals deserving an environment that fosters a sense of purpose and responsibility.
The Franciscan Brothers have shown me that true education extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of how we live our lives. Their approach has not only educated minds but also nurtured hearts, fostering a generation of individuals committed to making a difference. For me and many others, their legacy in education is a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of learning when guided by principles of compassion, service, and community.
On a personal level, I was blessed early in my career to meet a Franciscan Brother who transformed my beliefs and understanding of life through how he embodies Franciscan values daily. He truly ‘walks the walk’ and became a model for me in understanding genuine service, selflessness, and humility. Being raised Catholic, I always believed in God and had faith in the teachings of Christ. However, my faith was not a part of my everyday life, and the conviction of my beliefs had eroded throughout my teenage years and into my early twenties. Being in the presence of this Brother has been a transformative experience for me. A new outlook on life, faith, and priorities has slowly taken shape as I have learned and continue to learn from him. Over the last decade, this Brother has become part of my family, helping to renew my wedding vows with my wife and even becoming the namesake of my firstborn son.
These men are the epitome of sacrifice and service to God. Their impact extends beyond the immediate results of their work. It can be seen in the values they promote and the examples they set. The Brothers remind us that true greatness is found not in personal achievement but in serving others and living a life of integrity and purpose. As they continue their mission, they ensure the continuation and relevance of Franciscan ideals in addressing the pressing issues of our time and in helping to shape a world that reflects the compassion and love that are at the heart of the Gospel.
