“Imagining Home” To Feature the Art of John Lewis Steptoe

Art by John Steptoe

The second art exhibition of the current academic year is set to open tomorrow, September 28, in the fifth-floor gallery of St. Francis College (SFC). It will feature the illustrations, paintings and drawings of the late John Lewis Steptoe, an artist and author who was born and raised in Brooklyn.

Titled Imagining Home, the exhibition will explore the idea of home in all of its many facets. Home can be a physical space or a state of mind. It is an amalgam of spaces, people, sights, sounds, scents and objects. In Brooklyn, home often conjures up thoughts of stoops and fire escapes. Memories — good, bad and neutral — are shaped at home.

Home is all of the things that shape our well-being and, ultimately, our human and spiritual development. Among the myriad themes “Imagining Home” will probe is the Franciscan concept of relating home to hospitality.

On Thursday, October 12, from 12:50 to 2:50 p.m., Steptoe’s daughter, Bweela Steptoe, will lead a gallery walk-through of “Imagining Home.” All SFC students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

Editor’s note: “Imagining Home” will be on view in the SFC Gallery through January 15, 2024. To learn more about the exhibition and John Steptoe, please see the event listing on SFC.edu.
