October Designated Franciscan Month at St. Francis College

Stained-Glass Panel in the SFC Chapel

On September 30, St. Francis College (SFC) will kick off its second annual Franciscan Month celebration with a Peace Run. Franciscan Month recognizes the life and legacy of two people — St. Clare and St. Francis of Assisi, the latter being SFC’s namesake — who inspired a worldwide movement for good that continues to thrive more than 800 years later. It is a time for the College to remind itself of its Franciscan foundation and intellectual tradition as well as the values that center and lead it as an institution.

This year, Franciscan Month will have Peace as its theme, which inspired many of the events that have been planned, including the kickoff. More than a dozen events and activities in total are on the schedule for Franciscan Month, including a blessing of the animals (October 6); a cellphone freedom hour (October 10); a performance by the Schola of St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y., an internationally renowned choral ensemble (October 24); and an interfaith appreciation breakfast (October 30), which will serve to celebrate the rich diversity of faiths represented at the College as well as strengthen its ties with surrounding faith communities in Brooklyn.

Other activities being planned for Franciscan Month include a book drive for children with cancer and an interfaith prayer wall, where members of the St. Francis College community and guests will have the opportunity to leave handwritten intentions for which the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn will pray. In addition, All Good Things, the blog run by SFC’s Office of Mission, Ministry and Interfaith Dialogue, will offer Franciscan-themed reflections throughout the month.

The complete schedule of Franciscan Month events is available at sfc.edu/franciscan-month (scroll down to the bottom of the page); events continue to be added, so check back often for the most current listing.
