Dr. Hughes was a professor at St. Francis for 47 years. He was a member of the College's Duns Scotus Honor Society and was well known for his lecture series which was open not just to students but to all members of the community.

Dr. Hughes wrote the textbooks, Man in Time, American Government, and The American Presidency, as well as the biography Richard M. Nixon, for which he was invited to the White House. He has also written novels, including Crispus Attucks, and Patrick Callahan: A Life in Brooklyn. Dr. Hughes was an inveterate poet, who in addition to his yearly Christmas poem, wrote many collections of poems, especially on birds.

These poems and some of his essays, as well as links to his books will be found on www.arthurjhughesphd.com which will be set up in the coming months.

At the 2008 Winter Commencement Dr. Hughes told the audience what made him particularly proud to teach at SFC. The students "want to do well, which is natural, but they want to do good in doing well.”

Arthur Hughes was 85.
