Wendy Galgan and Eric Platt - Leaders in their Fields

Two St. Francis College professors can claim recent achievements for leadership in their fields. English Professor and Chair of the Department Wendy Galgan was honored with the 2015 Educator of Excellence Award by the New York State English Council (NYSEC) while History Professor Eric Platt was elected president of the New York State Association of European Historians (NYSAEH).

Professor Galgan's award was presented at the NYSEC's annual conference. The organization honors educators from kindergarten through higher education. It focuses on the teaching of English Language Arts; supporting professional development and best practices in education.

Professor Platt previously served as Vice President of NYSAEH before being elected President of the organization. NYSAEH was founded more than 60 years ago and despite its name includes historians from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The organization fosters the study of European history from earliest times to the present.

Wendy Galgan received her doctorate from CUNY Graduate Center in New York for her dissertation, She's Poetry in Motion, which focuses on metaphors of movement in the work of some contemporary American women poets.In addition to poetry, Dr. Galgan's areas of academic interest include war literature, gender studies, pop culture and genre literature.She teaches freshman composition and literature courses at St. Francis College.Dr. Galgan's publications include the Forward to Editions Bibliotekos's Battle Runes: Writings on War (edited by Gregory F. Tague), the chapter "'Why doesn't make any difference.It's time you moved on faith': Detection, Redemption and Saving Grace" in Christianity and the Detective Story (edited by Walter Raubicheck and Anya Morland), and the essay "Dale Evans: Girlie-Girl with a Six-Gun" in Westerns: Paperback Novels and Movies from Hollywood (edited by Paul Varner).She has a forthcoming book chapter on Alicia Ostriker's poetry.Dr. Galgan is Editor of Assisi: An Online Journal of Arts & Letters, is an Editorial Board Member for the journal ASEBL and reviews audiobooks for Library Journal.She was recently selected as a member of the first cohort of Public Scholars for the New York Council for the Humanities. Eric Platt is the author of Britain and the Bestandstwisten: The Causes, Course and Consequences of British Involvement in the Dutch Religious and Political Disputes of the Early Seventeenth Century (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht). His research on British involvement in the Dutch dispute stems from his interest in transnational relations during the early modern period, especially on interactions among various cultures and the impact they had on each other.His next major research project will look at Anglo-Dutch relations on this side of the Atlantic, specifically the founding of Gravesend by the Englishwoman Deborah Moody in New Netherland during the 1640s.

Dr. Platt is also an active participant in the Tuning Project, a national collection of college history professors that aims to redefine and reinvigorate the teaching of history across the United States.An article co-written by Dr. Platt, describing a Tuning event held at St. Francis College, was recently published in the American Historical Association magazine.
