SFC Tv Premieres on St. Francis College Website

Students Producing News and Feature Stories for Web
New Spotlights on Students, Professors and Alumni Also Added to Site

When almost 200 students from East New York Prep Charter School spent the day at St. Francis College, a camera and two St. Francis Communications Arts students captured the experience, turning the video and interviews into a story like any seen on a local newscast. It was the latest effort from SFC TV, a burgeoning collection of news stories and features about St. Francis College; reported, shot and produced by the College’s students.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to get real world experience and build up their resumes before graduation,” said Communications Arts Chair Lynne Jackson. “With our cameras, HD studio and editing equipment, they’re using all the same tools that professionals use in a variety of entertainment fields.”

Past stories include athletic profiles on the Women’s NCAA Division I Water Polo Team and Serbian Basketball Player Stefan Perunicic as well as an interview with Author Salman Rushdie. The completed stories are all available on the St. Francis website at http://www.sfc.edu/sfctv.

In addition to News and Features on the site, other St. Francis College students are also having their work featured on a page devoted to the Films and Videos they make in their production classes. The videos come from the student film festivals run at the end of each semester.

Also new on the St. Francis Website for the 2009-2010 school year are a series of new spotlights on students, faculty and alumni. Among the students featured are Erica Zaragoza, a Political Science Major with her sights set on Law School and a future in politics; Syed Hassan, a transfer student and Biology Major who plans to attend Medical School; and Diana Greene, who while studying to become a teacher in special education is working part-time with adults with Down Syndrome.

Several new video spotlights of faculty members at St. Francis feature professors such as Kristy Biolsi, a Psychology Professor who studies the cognitive abilities of Pinnipeds like sea lions, seals and walruses; English Professor John Lennon who talks about the various career paths for an English Major as well as his own coming book on Hobo Culture and how it reflected society; and Kareen Williams, a History Professor who incorporates her own personal experiences growing up in Jamaica as well as those of her students and their families to bring home the relevance of her courses.

Among the new alumni featured are Michael MacIntyre, Global Head of Intra Group Sales, HSBC Bank and Yolanda Singh who left a career as Assistant Director on programs like Good Morning America, Nightline and College Football to start her own food company.

St. Francis College, founded in 1859 by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, is located in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Since its founding, the College has pursued its Franciscan mission to provide an affordable, high-quality education to students from New York City’s five boroughs and beyond.
