South Africa at Liberty: Photographs and Videos by Yasser Booley

'St. Francis College is proud to present the photo and video exhibition South Africa at Liberty: Photographs and Videos by Yasser Booley, on display from September 5 to December 1 in the St. Francis Callahan Center Art Gallery.

"I'm proud to be showing my work in one of the greatest cities in the world and to represent the pride and the dignity of South Africans," said Yasser Booley, who sees photography as pedagogy, a way to start the learning process.

Booley will be giving a talk, Photography as Pedagogy: From Apartheid to Liberty?, about his work and his creative experiences on Monday, September 10 at 12:10 in the College's Founders Hall. (Watch Yasser talk about South Africa at Liberty)

Booley will be an artist-in-residence at St. Francis College from September 5 – 25, with new work added to his #easystreet project as he explores Brooklyn and the perceptions and realities of the American dream.

His residency will include additional talks, working with students in the classroom and on photography field trips, as well as workshops and active engagement with faculty, staff and community members; all a continuation of expansion of #easystreet.

Curated by Janice Glowski, South Africa at Liberty is a celebration, an indulgent vision of photographer Yasser Booley's South Africa. Taken from an extensive body of work that begins on the eve of the abolition of apartheid, the photographs span two decades and show ordinary people in the eclectic "rainbow nation" caught at the crossroads, entangled in a disheveled unity. Booley brings to light the beauty of humanity through religious and cultural differences, through class and gender diversity, revealing his unbridled optimism, often sprinkled with an accidental irony.

The South Africa at Liberty exhibition at St. Francis College, Brooklyn, includes new street photography and video by the artist that brings contemporary Cape Town (Bo-Kaap) and Brooklyn into dialogue.

The show coincides with the book Yasser Booley: South Africa at Liberty, Collection Africalia Editions series published by Africalia Editions & Stichting Kunstboek, 2016. The original South Africa at Liberty project was curated by Joan Legalamitlwa.

All photos taken by Yasser Booley from South Africa at Liberty are available for purchase.
