St. Francis College Hosts Insurance Industry Fair

Spotlight on SFC's New Risk Management & Insurance Concentration

More than 100 St. Francis College students learned about a variety of careers in the insurance industry at the College's first Insurance Informational Fair, on Tuesday March 25th in the Callahan Center.

Several St. Francis Alumni who work in the insurance industry were among the representatives. John Riley '65, a retired risk manager for Dun & Bradstreet, Hertz and Allstate was instrumental in setting up a new Concentration in Risk Management and Insurance offered through the St. Francis Management Department as well as Tuesday's informational fair.

"We want students here to see what a big industry insurance is," said Riley. He pointed out that New York hosts countless Insurance Companies, Insurance Brokers and Major Organizations, all of which are looking for smart, hard working college graduates to fill their constant need for entry level insurance professionals. "Having a Risk & Insurance Concentration will give St. Francis graduates an excellent leg up in the hiring process. It's a great opportunity."

Brendan Cahalan '92 worked for KeySpan before going to Standard Motor Products to oversee risk management. "The industry is not just selling life insurance. And the skills you have are transferable from company to company," said Cahalan who pointed out that every company needs to deal with something like risk management so students could find a job anywhere. He said sales makes up only about 10% of the insurance industry.

John Dilyard, Chairman of the Management Department said the company representatives were happy to meet the students who came to the fair and were impressed with their knowledge of the field and their professionalism.
