Susan Brownmiller Speaks on the Supreme Court and Reproductive Rights

Renowned Author & Feminist Delivers Constitution Day Lecture

Brooklyn Heights, NY - On the heels of the impending nomination of a Supreme Court justice, the prolific author, activist, and feminist Susan Brownmiller will lead a Constitution Day Lecture titled "The Supreme Court and Reproductive Rights" on September 20 at 11 a.m. on the campus of St. Francis College.

Susan Brownmiller

Sponsored by St. Francis College and the St. Thomas More Pre-Law Society, Brownmiller's lecture will address the precarious state of Roe V. Wade and what overturning the ruling could mean to the sovereignty of women across the country. The lecture will be held in Founders Hall and moderated by Dr. Miriam Salholz, associate professor of Law at SFC.

"Brownmiller is a renowned expert and life-long activist on matters concerning women's' rights," Salholz said. "Every year on Constitution Day, our invited speaker focuses on a different aspect of the Constitution. This particular topic is timely, as the status of Roe v. Wade is debated, and may be overturned, returning the issue of reproductive rights to individual states. Brownmiller will also address current legislation concerning victim protections in cases of rape."

Brownmiller worked across the nation as a journalist and activist in the early 1970s. She became an outspoken contributor to the Second Wave Feminist movement, engaging in topics such as abortion rights, anti-pornography movements, and the sexual power dynamics between men and women.

With the publication of her book Against Our Will: Men, Women, and Rape in 1975, Brownmiller joined the ranks of key members of the women's liberation movement.

The Constitution Day lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Tearanny Street, Executive Director of Marketing & Communications at [email protected] or 718-489-2016.
