Service is important at St. Francis College and our mission is to help all SFC students become Servant Leaders. The Office of Mission, Ministry & Interfaith Dialogue works to develop service opportunities for the Terriers Community.

Franciscan Service Program Mission Statement
SFC's Franciscan Service Program is committed to transforming the lives of our students inside and outside the classroom, inspiring them in a lifelong commitment to service and citizenship.
The Program builds upon the Franciscan value of serving others by providing opportunities for students to put their knowledge into action - from classroom to community. Our students gain skills and exposure to help explore possible career choices while being good neighbors serving in the community.
Steps to Participate
- Identify a service engagement with a Community Partner (see below)
- Schedule and confirm a specific service engagement
- Review the Service Orientation Guidelines
- Complete the Volunteer Registration Form
- Complete the Service Completion Form upon completion of the service engagement

The American Lung Association
- The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. St. Barbara’s Roman Catholic Church
- Marcos A. Mora, an alumnus of the Class of 2010 and Director of Religious Education at St. Barbara’s Roman Catholic Church is seeking prospective catechists, interested in volunteering their time to teach the youth about the Catholic faith. The individual needs to be 18 years of age or older, Catholic and able to work with children from 6-18 (grades 1-12). Although prior experience would be great, it is not necessary. It is required that the person has the heart to share the faith with children and is willing to volunteer on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. The Brooklyn Prom Project
- The Brooklyn Prom Project is the local chapter of the Operation Prom National Network, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income students attend their proms by providing free prom dresses. Volunteers are welcome to participate at:

- Pack items onto a truck at Kings Plaza and help offload at UAI Math & Science for Young Women.

Brooklyn Book Bodega
Brooklyn Book Bodega increases the number of 100+ book homes in Brooklyn. Research shows that households with 100+ books boost life outcomes for children and adolescents. Despite the resources and wealth in Brooklyn—parts of our own community are classified as book deserts, areas with very few books available for sale or lending. Volunteers 18+ are welcome.
Brooklyn Book Festival (July signup)
Our volunteers are an important part of the community spirit of the Festival and welcomed both authors and audiences to enjoy the day. We look forward to welcoming volunteers for the Sept/Oct 2024 Festival and will post the registration information in July.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is an urban botanic garden that connects people to the world of plants, fostering delight and curiosity while inspiring an appreciation and sense of stewardship of the environment.
The organization will contact volunteers as needed for various events.

CHiPS
Founded in 1971, CHiPS is now a full-service soup kitchen and food pantry open six days a week, as well as a home for expectant single mothers. For over fifty years, CHiPS has served as a beacon of hope to thousands of friends and neighbors in need—and has been able to succeed thanks to people like you. Our friends, supporters and volunteers help ensure CHiPS keep the doors open, the meals hot, and the support ready for years to come.
Fort Greene Park Conservancy
Caring for public spaces is an all-hands activity. From spring through fall, we offer several opportunities for you to get involved, whether that’s hands-on work in the park, or helping Fort Greene Park Conservancy run our many public programs. From individuals to corporate groups, there’s an opportunity for everyone.

Good Shepherd Services
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, with options for groups and individuals to contribute their time through ongoing, occasional, or one-time commitments.
Heights and Hills
Currently, we strongly prefer volunteers who live and/or can travel to the following Brooklyn neighborhoods: Flatbush, East Flatbush, East New York, Crown Heights, and Bedford Stuyvesant. Heights and Hills volunteers provide friendship and support to frail and homebound older adults in 19 diverse Brooklyn communities. They visit, go for walks, assist with grocery shopping, chat about art and cultural events, or help master a new smartphone.
Letters Against Isolation
We fight senior loneliness one letter at a time. Through handwritten messages of love, hope, and joy, our volunteer community brings seniors connection and improves their mental and physical health.
Migrant Center
The Migrant Center of The Church of St. Francis of Assisi is Inspired by the Franciscan tradition of ministering to people who are alienated, displaced, or persecuted. The Migrant Center assists immigrants/migrants with their legal needs:
- Volunteer every week as an intake coordinator.
- Be a translator from your native tongue to English, during intakes or translating documents.
- Due to the learning curve for volunteers, the minimum commitment is 32 hours.

Prospect Park
Prospect Park Alliance engages thousands of volunteers annually to help keep Brooklyn’s Backyard green, vibrant and welcoming. The volunteer season runs from April through November. Register today to become a volunteer.
Sant'Egidio
Sant'Egidio is a Christian community born in 1968 in Rome and now spread in 70 countries. It's rooted in prayer, service to the poor and work for peace.
- Interested volunteers to befriend an elderly person at Hopkins Rehabilitation Center (155 Dean Street, Brooklyn)
- Opportunities are on Wednesdays (3-7 p.m.) and Sundays (10:30 a.m.-1:30 pm).
