Dr. Terry Williams Presents "The Hidden Social Worlds of New York City"
Sociologist Terry Williams, a professor at the New School for Social Research, presents "The Hidden Social Worlds of New York City." Between 1991 and 1996, and again between 2000 and 2020, Dr. Williams ventured hundreds of times into the tunnels between West 72nd and West 96th Streets to understand the "life on the margins and out of sight" of their residents.
His book Life Underground: Encounters with People Below the Streets of New York tells the story of the people living underground and how all are linked within a web of overlapping social worlds, above and below the ground, providing an understanding of what life below the streets entails.
