St. Francis College is pleased to welcome Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., as this year's featured guest in the Thomas J. Volpe Lecture Series, an annual event that, for the past 25 years, has introduced SFC students to world-renowned leaders from politics, literature, journalism, business and entertainment.

Jeffries will join Miguel Martinez-Saenz, Ph.D., president of St. Francis College, in a conversation focused on Jeffries' early life in Brooklyn, his educational pursuits in college and law school, his motivations for becoming and remaining an elected public official, and his advice to young people who want to be public servants.

"We're grateful to Mr. Jeffries for sharing his experiences and insights from growing up in Brooklyn to his role today as a member of the Democratic Party leadership in the United States Congress," said President Martinez-Saenz. "I hope this conversation deepens our students' understanding of the dreams, aspirations and experiences that motivate those who serve the public, rather than contributing to the partisan rancor that defines so much of political dialogue today. I'm immensely grateful to Mr. Jeffries for taking time with the SFC community."

Serving his fifth term in the United States Congress representing New York's 8th District -- which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens -- Jeffries is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and House Budget Committee. He is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, having been elected to that position by his colleagues in November 2018. In January 2020, Speaker Nancy Pelosi selected Jeffries to serve as one of the seven House impeachment managers in the Senate trial of President Donald Trump, making him the first African American man to serve in that role.

For the past 25 years, Thomas J. Volpe, chairman emeritus of the St. Francis College Board of Trustees, has introduced SFC students to world-renowned speakers from politics, literature, journalism, business and entertainment in his namesake lecture series. He has challenged SFC students to listen to and reflect upon aspects of contemporary and professional life that they may have never considered before.
