SFC Biology Professor in Forefront of Antivral Research

New research from Steven M. Lipson, Professor of Biology and Health Promotions at St. Francis College could pave the way to use plant chemicals to prevent thousands of children from being killed each year by an intestinal virus. The work by Dr. Lipson (Principal Investigator) and colleagues sets the stage for using natural plant chemicals (from cranberries, grapes and green tea) to combat intestinal viruses like rotavirus. In third world countries, hundreds of thousands of infants and young children die every year from rotavirus, which causes diarrhea, fever, and cramps.

Professor Michele Montecalvo was looking for a way to make her Health Issues class more relevant to her students this semester; so she decided to tap into a hot piece of popular culture. She assigned the memoir, Orange is the New Black, by Piper Kerman, which has now become a Netflix TV series.

SFC Alumnus Cesar Vargas '05 Featured in New York Times

CCesar Vargas graduated from St. Francis College in 2005 and since then has championed the cause for citizenship for unauthorized immigrants. His parents brought him to the United States from Mexico when he was five. Vargas' status stopped him from joining the United States Armed Forces and now is putting up roadblocks in his effort to become a lawyer.
