Setting out to reshape the context of women artists in the music industry, Le Tigre came together in the late 90's with a combination of danceable music and overtly feminist lyrics. Band member Johanna Fateman and the director of the documentary Who Took the Bomp? Le Tigre: On Tour, Kerthy Fix, talked about the movie at a standing room only screening and question and answer session on Wednesday, March 23 at St. Francis College.

St. Francis College's Director of Alumni Relations and Graduate of the Class of '74, Dennis McDermott was honored as the Irishman of the Year at the Tenth Annual St. Patrick's Day Breakfast hosted by Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, Al O'Hagan and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz on Thursday, March 17 at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

On March 17, a crowd of students, faculty, and members of the community gathered in the Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture & Education at St. Francis College for a reading by author Nahid Rachlin from her book, Persian Girls: A Memoir, followed by a Question & Answer session, book signing and reception in the theater's lobby. The intimate setting was appropriate for a reading that delved deep into the author's personal life.

"As a young girl in Italy, my mother and grandmother spent hours every Sunday trying to teach me how to crochet and cook lasagna," said St. Francis College Chemistry and Physics Assistant Professor Filomena Califano. "But all I wanted to do was play with my brother's toys, particularly assembling his robots or a bike."

Old and young music fans gathered in St. Francis College's Founders Hall on Wednesday, March 2 to watch Billy Joel's documentary, "The Last Play at Shea." Following the documentary, the audience was treated to a discussion with musician David Rosenthal, who toured with Joel for 15 years, the Executive Producer of the film Todd Kamelhar and Joel's archivist Jeff Schock.

Admitting that from the outside, societal changes in Saudi Arabia may not look like much, Saudi Arabian Diplomat Tariq Allagany told the audience in St. Francis College's Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture and Education on February 28, that great changes have, in fact, been made and that the country is on course for more, though at a pace that will be slow, steady and preserve the safety and security of the country and its citizens.

"Without Twitter, without Facebook, without YouTube, there's a very good chance that Mubarak might have endured," media studies expert Paul Levinson told a packed audience referring to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in St. Francis College's Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture & Education on February 23 as part of his lecture, Marshall McLuhan at 100. "It's tough to overthrow someone but it becomes easier when that attempt to change the government is tied into a global village that's watching and communicating back and forth."

On Valentine's Day, St. Francis College hosted its second annual reading of poetry and prose, Love Springs Eternal, by the senior citizens in the College's For Seniors Writing Class, taught by Professor Mitch Levenberg, Director of the College's Academic Enhancement Center. The event took place in a crowded Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture and Education with guests including City Councilman Stephen Levin, whose support along with Council Speaker Christine Quinn, makes the For Seniors program possible.

St. Francis College Economics Professor Behrouz Tabrizi will be a special guest on the NET TV program, In the Arena, on the "Crisis in Egypt," which debuts this Sunday, February 13 at 7:00pm.
